Working with learning paths
Who is this article for?
Administrators interested in learning about learning paths.
Professional Administrator permissions required.
Learning paths are a selection of courses grouped into blocks that allow learners to progress through and master specific subjects, enabling you to enrol multiple learners in multiple courses at once.
Understanding learning paths
Learning paths consist of blocks, with each block containing one or more courses in different levels. Learners must complete each block in sequence.
Each block can be sequential or free:
- Sequential: Learners complete one course from each level before progressing
- Free: Learners complete all courses in the block before progressing
Each block can have its own milestone, which is the suggested timeframe for completion. Completing all blocks completes the learning path.
Adding a new learning path
To create a learning path:
- Sign in to your portal as an administrator.
- Go to Learning paths.
- Select Add new.
- Add an image, Name, Description, select a Category, and specify a certification for your learning path.
- Proceed to the first block.
To configure the first block:
- Add a block name and description.
- Set the suggested milestone for this block, which can be either a specific date or a number of days after the learner has been enrolled in the learning path.
- Select if you want the block to be sequential or not.
- Start adding courses.
- If this is a sequential block, add different course levels.
To add additional blocks:
- Click Insert Block.
- Follow the block configuration steps above.
- Add as many blocks as you need.
To finalise the learning path:
- Use the up and down arrows to rearrange the blocks, or drag and drop them to the desired position.
- Remove any unwanted blocks using the remove option.
- Click Save to create the learning path.
You can edit a learning path by clicking on the edit icon.
Assigning a learning path to a learner
There are two ways to assign a learner to a learning path.
From the Users list
To assign from the Users list:
- Sign in to your portal as an administrator.
- Go to Users.
- Select the learner you want to assign the learning path to.
- Change to Learning paths.
- Activate the Enrol slider.
From the Learning path
To assign from the Learning path:
- Sign in to your portal as an administrator.
- Go to Learning paths.
- Select the learning path that you want to assign to a learner.
- Change to Users.
- Find the learner that you want to assign the learning path to.
- Activate the Enrol slider.
Note: Enrolling a learner in the learning path will automatically enrol them in all courses in the learning path. The learner will need to follow the designed learning path to complete it and cannot access courses at will. If the learner is already enrolled in a course and has made progress, this will be reflected in the learning path. If you add courses to blocks after creating the learning path, use Recalculate status to update the learner's status based on current course completions.
Viewing learning paths as a learner
As a learner, you will find the learning path that you are enrolled in within your My Courses list.
Accessing the learning path will show the different blocks and levels in the learning path, as well as the suggested milestone.
Completing a course in the learning path will prompt you to go back to the learning path. Depending on the block and whether it is sequential or not, completing a course will complete the level and allow you to proceed to the next level.
If the block is not sequential, learners assigned to this learning path will need to complete all courses in each block. If the block is sequential, learners will need to complete all levels to proceed to the next block. Learners need to complete all blocks to complete the learning path.
